Department Mission

Animal Services operates the Austin Animal Center, one of the largest no-kill shelters in the nation, with a live-outcome rate exceeding 95 percent. Throughout the year, the Austin Animal Center is a temporary home for thousands of pets, working to place all adoptable pets in homes. Austin Animal Services emphasizes a prevention-based, educational approach by enforcing animal-related ordinances and by connecting residents with resources to care for animals in the community.

Department Goals

Maintain a 95% or greater live outcome percentage for intaked animals.
Maximize efforts to reunite pets with their owners.
Ensure that pet owners have opportunities to sterilize their animals at little to no cost and that almost all animals adopted from the Austin Animal Center are spayed/neutered upon adoption.
