Department Mission

The City of Austin's Economic Development Department supports and recruits business to Austin through all divisions, and will promote a competitive, sustainable and equitable economy for all.

Department Goals

Create and sustain jobs that lead to economic mobility for Austinites who are historically underrepresented.
Cultivate and invest in workforce development programming that matches employers' skill needs and successfully prepares economically disadvantaged residents for family-sustaining careers.
Ensure all Austinites have access to cultural amenities.
Grow Austin's creative industry through retention and expansion programming for local artists, musicians, and creatives.
Initiate and deliver effective programming to retain and grow local businesses.
Provide support services and funding for businesses to survive in Austin.
Leverage City assets and strategic investments to support equitable community outcomes and foster a thriving, sustainable economy, and to grow the tax revenue

  1. Amount of funding distributed to the community
  2. Number of Small Businesses Supported by City of Austin Programs
  3. Number of jobs supported by any form of capacity building that creates or sustains employment
  4. Percent of trainees who successfully complete a workforce development program that leads to a self-sustaining wage
