Department Mission

Transportation and Public Works (TPW) was established to create a centralized department that specializes in transportation-related infrastructure and maintaining the City's right-of-way. The mission of the Transportation Public Works Department is to build and maintain a better community by delivering services to every corner of Austin. TPW is responsible for a vast range of services, including: maintenance of streets, bridges, sidewalks, and urban trails; roadway signage and markings; traffic engineering; administration and oversight of on-street parking and parking meters; and operation of City-owned parking lots and garages. The Department also oversees transportation systems planning, permitting and coordination of construction and maintenance in the City's right-of-way, and the Safe Routes to School program.
