Airport Airside Operations Coordinator

Purpose:
 

This position coordinates work and leads staff who perform work on and near the Airport Operations Areas (AOA) of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations and the Airport Certification Manual (ACM).

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Ensures AUS is in compliance with 14 CFR Part 139; applicable 150 Series Advisory Circulars (ACs); the ACM; and other relevant Federal, State and Local regulations by participating in daily inspections of runways, taxiways, ramps and other aeronautical areas; identifies applicable violations and issues warnings and notices of violation to individuals; and addresses and reports unsafe conditions to mitigate hazards.
  2. Assists the Airport Duty Manager by responding to, coordinating, and resolving airside emergencies such as alerts, severe weather, irregular operation, security breaches, and other events affecting airport operations in accordance with the Airport Emergency Plan and National Incident Management System (NIMS) methodology; and serves as airport field representative until relieved by supervisory authority.
  3. Coordinates and monitors daily work on and near the AOA by other airport divisions, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), contractors, and other airfield stakeholders to ensure a safe operating environment; initiates minor corrective actions with the related groups; and makes recommendations for substantive changes.
  4. Identifies and anticipates operational and safety concerns through continuous surveillance and radio contact with the control tower; ensures timely reporting of hazards and provides suggestions for mitigation.
  5. Enforces airport safety policies and procedures. Identifies applicable violations and issues warnings and notices of violation to individuals.
  6. Drafts and disseminates Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs) per AC 150/5200-28 and FAA Job Order (JO) 7930.2 to meet Federal requirements.
  7. Resolves problems and complaints from airport customers and tenants; meets with airport tenants to explain airport policies.
  8. Manages daily resource needs (parking spots, counters, baggage devices) through coordinating airline and stakeholder requests and utilizing gate management software and the Airport Operations Database (AODB).
  9. Administers the Ground Support Equipment Registration and Monitoring Program (GSE RAMP), maintains inventory of airline equipment, inspects vehicles, and reports discrepancies to a supervisor.
  10. Provides training on airfield procedures and regulations; coordinates and performs on-the-job training for new hires; and documents daily performance of the trainee and communicates results to appropriate management.
  11. Keeps abreast of all ongoing changes to Federal, State, and Local laws, rules, and regulations related to the position, FAA advisory circulars, Airport Security Program, and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) directives. Maintains proficiency by passing regularly scheduled examinations.
  12. Operates automated and networked information display systems, video cameras, monitors, radios, and communication systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of 14 CFR Part 139 and related regulations to manage and maintain aircraft operations.
  • Knowledge of airport property; other facilities within the airport; and aircraft types, size, seating capacity, evacuation routes, etc. to manage operations and emergency events.
  • Knowledge of airport operations sufficient to be able to direct, manage, and control field operations.
  • Knowledge of NIMS to work with other agencies and departments during all airport emergencies.
  • Knowledge of safety and security practices to coordinate and provide security.
  • Knowledge of the simultaneous use of several radio frequencies sufficient to be able to provide and receive information from airport, FAA, airline, and other personnel.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communications.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Ability to communicate positively and effectively with elected officials; AUS leadership; managers; Local, State, and Federal agency representatives; contractors; tenants; foreign and domestic dignitaries; passengers; and members of the public from widely diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Aviation Management, Airway Science, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field, plus (1) year of airport operations work experience.
    OR
  • One (1) year of directly related professional experience may substitute for one (1) year of the required education up to four (4) years.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • Valid Texas Class "C" Driver License.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and obtain and maintain Federally-mandated security clearances required to work at an airport.
