Airport Electronics Technician

Purpose:
 

Under general supervision, this position installs, maintains, inspects, and repairs electromechanical access control, security, CCTV, electronic fire alarm and suppression, audio/video public address systems, and instrumentation and control equipment at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS).

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Installs, maintains, and diagnoses complex electromechanical and electronic security and fire alarm systems and equipment in 24/7 commercial and remote AUS facilities.
  2. Repairs various CCTV systems using bucket truck and aerial man lifts.
  3. Completes assigned work orders including making materials ready, performing quality inspections, preparing system outage requests, reading blueprints and schematics, preparing as-built mark-up, and other tasks as necessary.
  4. Performs preventative maintenance on all security, life safety, and audio/visual systems and components in the AUS terminal and remote facilities.
  5. Maintains records of repairs, calibrations, and tests and records information in the asset management system (AMS).
  6. Calibrates and maintains equipment and infrastructure at and between control center and remote sites.
  7. Installs and maintains digital and analogue airfield microwave system.
  8. Oversees and assists with the maintenance and repair activities performed by third-party contractors.
  9. Advises leadership of equipment needs and recommends specific types and models.
  10. Coordinates maintenance, repairs, and system outages with AUS facility users.
  11. Reviews, approves, processes, and coordinates all fire alarm/suppression system impairment requests and hot work permits.
  12. Ensures all systems comply with all Federal, State, City, and Local regulations, policies, procedures, and ordinances.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of safety rules, practices, and procedures when working with energized electrical/electronic equipment.
  • Knowledge of operating, installing, testing, repairing, and maintaining electromechanical security, CCTV, and access control system and components.
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools, and materials used in electronic system maintenance and construction.
  • Knowledge of electromechanical door locking systems.
  • Knowledge of modern electrical, electronic, and microwave control systems.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic theory as it applies to relays and control devices.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, City of Austin and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Skill in the use of hand tools common to the electronic trade.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software.
  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematic diagrams, drawings, manufacturer manuals, and technical instructions.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces where there is limited or restricted means of entry and exit.
  • Ability to test and calibrate instruments and make precise and close tolerance repairs and adjustments.
  • Ability to wear anti-fall (SRL) body harness for confined space entry or working from aerial man lifts or bucket truck.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees, tenants, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to subordinates, customers, and management.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus four (4) years of experience in repair and maintenance or installation of electronics and electromechanical equipment, including one (1) year of experience which was in the Aviation industry.
  • Experience may substitute education up to four (4) years.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • Valid State of Texas Class “C” Driver License.
