| Purpose: |

Under limited supervision, this position performs advanced firefighting work with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Instructs and participates in firefighting activities as a multi-company commander for assigned area. |
| Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: |
| |
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Assumes command at emergency situations pending the arrival of a superior officer and assists superior officer in direction/coordination of all operations to control emergency situations.
- Designs, evaluates, prepares reports or presentations and assists with implementing fire programs in accordance with City policy, applicable laws and regulations, and sound business practices.
- Prepares articles and statistics for news media, as required.
- Interprets and counsels appropriate personnel regarding department policy and procedures.
- Carries out work plans to achieve program or section goals.
- Provides assistance in budget preparation of supplies, personnel and monitoring of assigned budget.
- Assists with pre-fire planning and inspections of hazards.
- Prepares and maintains required station logs and other periodic and special activity records.

| Minimum Qualifications: |
| |
- Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
- Six (6) years of service from the date of commission in the Austin Fire Department, including a minimum of two (2) years at the Fire Lieutenant rank.
- Eligible to promote to Fire Captain with completion of all appropriate Civil Service examinations.

| Licenses and Certifications Required: |
| |
- Valid and current Texas Driver License.
- Current Firefighter/EMT certifications and credentialing by the Office of the Medical Director.
- Fire Inspector certification.
- Fire Officer II certification within one (1) year of promotion.
