Park Ranger II

Purpose:
 

Under limited supervision, this position serves to protect and conserve City parklands and facilities.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Leads and performs patrol activities, conservation assignments, education, and outreach assignments that promote responsible recreation. Serves to protect and conserve parkland and facilities.
  2. Provides customer service to park patrons, including park information, rules, regulations, laws, ordinances, and municipal codes. Interprets natural and historical features in and around the City of Austin parks.
  3. Assists first responder agencies, provides first aid, and determines need for and requests emergency services.
  4. Issues notices of park exclusions/offenses and/or issue electronic citations for violations.
  5. Applies mitigation strategies and determines application of established protocols for illegal activities.
  6. Develops, organizes, and/or administers educational and interpretive trainings for the public. 
  7. Organizes public events, programs, and volunteer projects.
  8. Assists with conservation assignments by assisting Resource staff with prescribed burns and by providing fire monitoring and control measures, invasive species removals, and revegetation projects.
  9. Assists with minor construction, maintenance, and/or repair projects.
  10. May serve as lead over volunteers and other Park Rangers.
  11. Monitors and completes incident reports and other routine documentation. Documents daily park patrol activity and metrics using GIS and mobile tools.

  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of City safety rules, regulations, laws, ordinances and municipal codes.
  • Knowledge of applicable processes, techniques and methods.
  • Knowledge of City parks, trails, and preserves.
  • Knowledge of City practice, policy and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Leave-No-Trace and Authority of the Resource techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic computer programs and applications.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
  • Skill in leadership and supervising small groups.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with City employees and the public.
  • Ability to multi-task, work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to learn different skills and apply them to various job functions.
  • Ability to hike five (5) miles on uneven terrain over long distances in hot, cold, hazardous, and inclement conditions.
  • Ability to ride a bicycle or hike long distances daily with a backpack on uneven terrain over long distances in hot, cold, or inclement weather and adverse conditions.
  • Ability to swim at a basic skill level in open water environment
  • Ability to undergo self-defense training to include various standard techniques and methods.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation from a two-year college or university plus one (1) year experience as a Park Ranger. Related experience may substitute for education up to two (2) years.
  • Completion of the Park Ranger Intermediate Coursework, and meeting of Park Ranger II physical fitness requirements within six (6) months of hire date.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • May be required to obtain certification in CPR, First Aid, Water Safety Instruction, or other certifications applicable to the assignment.
