Under general direction, this position supervises police officers in ensuring the public safety, law enforcement and investigation of criminal activities. |
| Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: |
| |
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Reviews current workload, develops work schedules and schedules time off.
- Ensures compliance with departmental policy and procedure.
- Instructs officers and cadets in law enforcement activities. Supervises, coordinates, and assigns the activities of shift of police officers or investigators.
- Confers with officers and evaluates filing of complaints. Assists and instructs officers in problem solving.
- Writes monthly, daily, and weekly reports. Responds to correspondence regarding cases. Reviews incident reports.
- Investigates citizen complaints about officers, traffic accidents, and unusual or suspicious conditions.
- Coordinates assignment of special projects. Coordinates division/section training activities.
- Participates in boards, commissions, committees, etc.
- Testifies in court.
- Conducts inspections.
- Responds to emergency situations, controls and coordinates activities of officers during critical incidents.
- Enforces Federal, State, and Local laws.

- Knowledge of legal procedure in filing and presenting charges in court.

- Knowledge of purchasing, personnel, financial, payroll and other administrative procedures and practices.
- Knowledge of vehicle and equipment use and principles.
- Knowledge of principles of supervision and the methods associated with operations management.
- Knowledge of federal grants administration including applications and monitoring requirements.
- Knowledge of program evaluation techniques including cost impact.
- Knowledge of fiscal planning and budget preparation.
- Skill in the care and use of firearms.

| Minimum Qualifications: |
| |
Education and/or Equivalent Experience: Two (2) continuous years as a police corporal/detective with the Austin Police Department. |
| Licenses and Certifications Required: |
| |
- Texas Class C Driver License.
- Police Officer and Advanced Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education.
