Purpose: |
|
Under nominal supervision, this position provides technical support to Animal Control staff and veterinary medicine to shelter animals in support of the shelter’s live outcome goal.
|
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: |
|
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Prevents and controls animal diseases through examination of all shelter animals.
- Performs duties as required under State of Texas Health and Safety code, including acting as Rabies Authority for Travis County, TX.
- Performs high volume, high quality spay/neuter surgeries for shelter animals.
- Is responsible for compliance with all shelter policies and local, state and federal regulations.
- Accurately maintains all required records in the shelter’s database in a timely manner.
- Contributes to the programs and services that support the shelter’s live outcome goal.

- Knowledge of Local, State and Federal animal health laws and regulations.
- Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and principles.
- Knowledge of City practice, policy, and procedures.
- Knowledge of current principles and practice of veterinary medicine.
- Knowledge of animal services and related programs.
- Knowledge of animal care and husbandry of common breeds of dogs, cat’s livestock and other animals kept as domestic pets.
- Skill in communicating effectively with the public.
- Skill in safely handling animals, including those with unknown temperament.
- Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
- Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
- Skill in using computers and related software applications.
- Ability to train others.
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with City employees and the public.
- Adhere to disease management and safety protocols.

Minimum Qualifications: |
|
- Graduation from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas.

Licenses and Certifications Required: |
|
- Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas.
