Surveyor-In-Training (SIT)

Purpose:
 

Under the general direction of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS), this position is responsible for performing surveying and surveying related activities on behalf of the City.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Performs land surveys on behalf of the City.
  2. Analyzes and reviews data gathered by field crews to ensure completeness and accuracy of survey information.
  3. Uses survey data to generate coordinate files for use in determining property lines, benchmarks, topographical features, cross-sections, field notes, quantities of materials used, and metes and bounds descriptions.
  4. Prepares scale drawings and plans for various construction projects, rights-of-way, easements, or boundary determinations.
  5. Prepares and reviews easements, property descriptions, plans, ordinances, and agreements.
  6. Researches City ownership, right-of-way, and other property issues.
  7. Interprets maps, construction drawings, and legal descriptions.
  8. Performs complex mathematical calculations using Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry.
  9. Performs related work as assigned.

May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training, and guidance to others.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods used in the measurement or determination of land boundaries, distances, elevations, areas, angles, and other features of the earth’s surface.
  • Knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Skilled in using various Global Positioning Surveying (GPS) applications
  • Skilled in the collection, analysis, and reporting of complex numerical data.
  • Skilled in established and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to properly maintain complex engineering files and records.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, plats, sketches, field books, and construction drawings.
  • Ability to adhere to the principles and practices of professional land surveying.
  • Ability to use CAD, GIS, and other survey-related software.
  • Ability to use a hand-held calculator.
  • Ability to conduct research with legal documents.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, Mathematics or a related field, plus one (1) year of experience under the direction of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS)
    OR
  • An Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field, plus (2) years experience under the direction of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS)
    OR
  • Graduation from an accredited high school, plus four (4) years of related experience under the direction of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS).
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 

Must be a certified Surveyor-In-Training (SIT) in good standing with the Texas Board of Professional Land Surveying (TBPLS).
