Plumber I

Purpose:
 

Under general supervision, this position performs skilled plumbing maintenance and repair in City-owned facilities.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Performs complex plumbing installations and repairs to fixtures such as commodes, sinks, urinals, bathtubs, sprinklers, piping systems, etc., including fitting, cutting, bending, etc. pipes; installing valves and faucets; setting fixtures; and replaceing washers.
  2. Unclogs drain and sewer lines using snake tools or sewer machines.
  3. Operates soldering tools, power tools, hand tools, trenching machine and backhoe.
  4. Measures, cuts, and bends pipes using rulers and hand tools.
  5. Records data on appropriate form and logs.
  6. Operates various power tools.
  7. Repairs, replaces, and installs pipes and fittings on sprinkler systems, drain lines, and hot and cold water systems.

May perform some leadership responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of water and heating system installation, maintenance and repair methods, tools, and materials.
  • Knowledge of City practice, policy and procedures.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Ability to trace and analyze causes of plumbing and heating problems.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints.
  • Ability to estimate time, materials, and costs of plumbing repairs.
  • Ability to be on-call 24 hours/day.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years of experience in the installation and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems including gas, water, and steam systems.
  • Experience may substitute for Education up to the maximum of four (4) years.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 

Must obtain the State of Texas Journeyman's Plumbing License within six (6) months of hire.
