Fire Protection Equipment Technician Crew Lead

Purpose:
 

Under general direction, this position monitors and performs skilled and specialized assembly, repair, maintenance, and upgrades of life support equipment including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). 

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Serves as lead to provide guidance and on-the-job training.
  2. Monitors team members work for efficiencies and quality.
  3. Monitors documentation of all required testing of protective equipment.
  4. Performs preventative maintenance on, and repairs and tests, all protective and breathing air equipment using specialized equipment to ensure safe and operational equipment.
  5. Adheres to manufacturer's requirements for testing, repairs, and preventative maintenance on all protective equipment.
  6. Obtains and maintains certification for all protective equipment used by Austin Fire Department (AFD) through manufacturer-approved vendors.
  7. Conducts training for AFD personnel in proper field maintenance procedures, and the proper use of protective equipment according to safety and manufacturer's guidelines.
  8. Conducts routine inspections.
  9. May perform modification or refurbishment of equipment.
  10. Monitors technical data on equipment to be serviced.
  11. Monitors contracted maintenance services.
  12. Monitors inventory and monitors replacement orders for required parts and supplies.

Provides leadership, work assignments, evaluations, training, and guidance to others.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of methods, systems and components, and materials used in repair and servicing of vehicles and other equipment including motorized heavy equipment and trailers.
  • Knowledge of protective equipment and SCBA performance standards and repair techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic operations of pneumatic compressors.
  • Knowledge of complex self-contained breathing apparatus components.
  • Knowledge of specialized high-pressure breathing air tanks.
  • Knowledge of operational function of equipment to be assembled, repaired, or maintained.
  • Knowledge of basic inventory and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in performing equipment and component repair.
  • Knowledge of Texas Fire Commission codes, National Fire Protection Association codes, and Federal guidelines concerning protective equipment requirements.
  • Knowledge of tasks such as work team concepts and productivity techniques, safety practices, City policies and procedures, and other operational requirements.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to prioritize work for a team.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair life support equipment.
  • Ability to use hand tools and standard and specialized measuring/testing equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to train employees in complex repair and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to participate in on-call duties after normal work hours.
Minimum Qualifications:
 

Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus six (6) years of experience in repair and/or maintenance of protective equipment.  

Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • Valid Texas Driver License.
  • Must be able to obtain the AFD vendor certification within eight (8) months of acceptance of position.
Physical Requirements:
 

May be exposed to loud noise, warm and cold conditions, standing for long periods, frequent stooping and bending, and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.
