Irrigation Crew Leader

Purpose:
 

Under general supervision, this position leads a crew that designs, oversees, assigns, directs, and performs tasks in the installation, maintenance, and operation of irrigation systems.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Reviews and approves final specifications for irrigation systems.
  2. Inspects, audits, and repairs irrigation systems.
  3. Provides advanced technical expertise to design professionals, gardeners, volunteers, vendors, and City staff.
  4. Reviews work of other crew members for completeness and quality, ensuring the crew’s assigned results are met. Trains others as required.
  5. Plans and implements water conservation programs.
  6. Monitors water quality and ensures compliance with all laws, regulations, and ordinances.
  7. Maintains detailed blueprints, diagrams, records, and reports associated with City irrigation systems.
  8. Creates accurate depictions of actual field installations (as-built drawings).
  9. Creates and oversees watering schedules with consideration to rainfall, solar radiation, wind speed, temperature, and other factors.
  10. Operates all necessary equipment for the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
  11. Tests, as necessary, backflow devices and performs cross-connection checks in accordance with City of Austin standards.
  12. Obtains local permits for new installs and repairs.
  13. Acts as backup to the supervisor in their absence. Records data on appropriate forms and logs and enters data into system, and prepares reports as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of installation, management, and operation of irrigation systems.
  • Knowledge of proper safety practices, procedures.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and ordinances applicable to work being performed.
  • Knowledge of water conservation initiatives and methods.
  • Knowledge of irrigation controllers.
  • Knowledge of backflow principles.
  • Skill in irrigation system layout.
  • Skill in planning, directing, approving, and organizing the work of others.
  • Skill in preparing simple reports.
  • Skill in working from drawings, blueprints, plans, and specifications.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
  • Ability to train or assist in the training of crew members, as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
 

Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years of experience in installing and maintaining irrigation systems, including at least one (1) year of crew leadership experience.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • Current Texas Class C Driver License.
  • Current Texas Landscape Irrigator’s License.
  • Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester License (BPAT) or the ability to obtain within 180 days.
  • Appropriate certification(s) or license(s) as specified for the assignment.
