Purpose: |

Under general supervision, performs the activities for the installation, removal, testing, and maintenance of electronic residential and small commercial metering devices for electric meters, and electric and water related activities within the City of Austin Utilities service area. |
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: |
|
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Exchanges residential and small commercial meters, including Meter Forms of 1S, 2S, & 12S with a secondary voltage range of 120v – 240v.
- Performs metering activities for electric and water utility customers, including disconnecting and reconnecting water meters, and de-energizing and energizing electric meters (below 600 volts).
- Disconnects or connects electric and water services, identifies potential tampering, and notifies the proper authority or department.
- Performs visual inspections and obtains meter reads from defective or damaged meters using appropriate technology and tools.
- Tests electronic meters for accuracy using various types of testing technology equipment.
- Interrogates meters both remotely and on-site and acquires reads from the headend system for billing purposes using web-based technology.
- Assists on trouble calls, trains others in use of procedures, special tools, and computer equipment used in meter maintenance.
- Resolves customer account discrepancies at the meter site, and appropriately communicates findings with the customer and internal workgroups.
- Organizes routes using the appropriate technology, to document water leaks, identify and assist with hazards in the field, and reports unsafe meter conditions.

- Knowledge of meter requirements and theories.
- Knowledge of applicable processes, techniques, and methods for applicable metering applications.
- Knowledge of city practices, policies, and procedures related to water and electric metering.
- Knowledge of meter testing equipment.
- Knowledge of metering technology, applications, and tools used to communicate with smart meters to obtain reads.
- Skill in speaking, writing, listening, mediating, negotiating, and conflict resolution.
- Skill in operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
- Skill in operating laptop computers and related software applications.
- Ability to maintain a high level of customer service and customer satisfaction while maintaining production goals.
- Ability to work cross functionally with multiple city departments.
- Ability to train others and work in a team environment on metering projects.
- Ability to recognize hazardous metering conditions in the field and take appropriate action.
- Ability to read electric and water meters accurately.
- Ability to use various meter testing equipment.
- Ability to properly lift and carry items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Ability to carry and grip steel tools, and to grasp, reach, pull, or push meters.
- Ability to perform strenuous work in all types of weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications: |
|
- Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years of experience in a field related to the job.

Licenses and Certifications Required: |
|
- Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License
