Purpose: |

Under general direction, this position is responsible for managing the operation of the Safety Management System (SMS) for the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and the Department of Aviation, in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements. This position also coordinates AUS’s certification process. |
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: |
|
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Responsible for aviation safety-related projects and programs, including training and educational programs for all AUS users on any safety systems.
- Assists in development and implementation and manages the operation of AUS’s SMS.
- Develops and maintains the SMS manual, using thorough knowledge and understanding of day-to-day airport and air carrier operations, FAR Part 139, and FAA safety regulations and standards.
- Conducts safety inspections and assessments of airfield areas.
- Organizes and participates on Safety Risk Management panels and participates in working groups related to airfield and ramp safety.
- Prepares and manages SMS information publications, including technical management of the SMS website and any other supporting applications.
- Monitors progress of SMS recommendations and action plans, prepares status reports and maintains databases.

- Knowledge of general Air Traffic Control (ATC) practices on airports and operations on the movement and non-movement areas.

- Skill in making presentations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with City employees and the public.
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.

Minimum Qualifications: |
|
Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Aviation Management, Engineering, Safety, Business Administration, or a related field, plus five (5) years of airfield-related experience, including two (2) years of which were in a leadership or supervisory capacity within Airport Operations, Airfield Construction, or Airport Certification.
