EMS Telecom Intern

Purpose:
 

Successfully complete internship, including obtaining an EMT-B Certification by the end of the internship.  

 
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Attends and successfully completes all classes required for Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification. 
  2. Attends and successfully completes all classes required for Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification
  3. Attends and successfully completes all classes required for American Heart Association CPR certification
  4. Attends and successfully completes all classes required for Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) certification
  5. Attends and successfully completes an initial EMS Academy intended to create an initial understanding of the City of Austin and Austin/Travis County EMS, its mission and vision as well as employment expectations and operational and clinical principles.
  6. Communicates regularly with the Austin/Travis County EMS Academy Captain. Attends meetings, classes, and work assignments as specified. Completes projects and homework as assigned by instructors and the Academy Training Captain
  7.  Functions in other roles designed to develop specific competencies essential to functioning as a Communications Intern within Austin/Travis County EMS Communications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Skill in responding quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing
  • Ability to listen effectively, determine effective course of action and take decisive action to resolve stressful situations.
  • Ability to maintain focus in environment with multiple sources of stimuli
  • Ability to remember numerous details and quickly recall essential information.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to communicate with others in a tactful manner
  • Ability to type 35 WPM with an 80% accuracy rate
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees, emergency medical personnel, and the public to provide customer service
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 

As an intern program, viable candidates will be required to meet and/or maintain the following standards:

  • Valid Texas Class “C” Driver’s License
Physical Requirements:
 
  • Unimpaired mobility: Must be able to quickly relocate to a back-up Communications Center or Mobile Communications Vehicle
  •  Lifting: Lightweight lifting from varying heights, carrying materials weighing approximately twenty (20) pounds.
  •  Fine Motor Skills: Must be able to quickly and accurately operate required computer and 911 phone equipment.
  •  Vision: Must have correctable vision acceptable for 911 communications computer and equipment operation; must have color acuity adequate for determination of incident flagging and alerts in the Computer Aided Dispatch Computer, 911 Phone System and other communications equipment.
  •  Hearing: Must be able to hear and understand information provided by callers by phone and must be able to hear and understand radio traffic.
  •  Speech: Must be able to speak and enunciate clearly and at a level audible to others by phone and radio; must be able to speak clearly in stressful situations; must be able to verbally communicate with patients, families and other emergency personnel by phone and radio.
