Fire Battalion Chief

Purpose:
 
Performs and supervises advanced firefighting work, with demonstrated use of initiative and independent judgment. Instructs and participates in firefighting activities as a multi-company commander for assigned area.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Directs, coordinates and supervises firefighting programs and/or personnel and assists and advises in the movement of said personnel
2. Recommends needed equipment, maintenance and personnel changes
3. Manages division activities, including review of facilities, equipment, and personnel to ensure effectiveness and efficiency identifying and analyzing trends and determining methods to implement change 
4. Manages supplies and personnel and assigned budget
5. Provides assistance in development and implementation of short and long range plans 
6. Implements goals, objectives, and resource requirements for activities within the division 
7. Develops, revises, and implements standard operating procedures, policies, and practices governing the division
8. Ensures all personnel have appropriate training, licenses and certifications to meet the demands of firefighting, rescues, resuscitation, and use of equipment
9. Reviews, modifies and revises training programs for Section evaluating the results of training programs and recommending revisions as needed
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
  Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of fiscal planning and budget preparation.
Knowledge of advanced managerial techniques and principles.
Skill at an advanced level in planning, organizing and directing the work of others.
Skill in advanced training of subordinate personnel.
Skill in advanced research and problem solving.
Skill in advanced oral and written, including public presentations.
Ability to manage complex situations with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Ability to maintain current required licenses and certifications.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
Eight (8) years of service from the date of commission in the Austin Fire Department, including a minimum of two (2) years at the Fire Captain rank.
Eligible to promote to Fire Battalion Chief with completion of all appropriate Civil Service examinations.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
Valid and current Texas driver’s license.
Current Firefighter/EMT certifications and credentialing by the Office of the Medical Director.
Fire Officer III certification within one (1) year of promotion.
