Fire Lieutenant

Purpose:
 
Perform highly complex firefighting work under limited supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Participate in firefighting activities as a multi-company supervisor for assigned area.


Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Researches, develops, revises, and provides recommendations of assigned area/programs in accordance with department’s standard operating policies and procedures
2. Ensures equipment and supplies are available
3. Analyzes, reviews, and prepares appropriate communications including memorandums, reports and presentations in a timely manner
4. Responds to inquiries from city personnel, customers, and the general public 
5. Provides technical assistance on all phases of work as a Section subject matter expert.
6. Coordinates, plans, and schedules training and educational activities
7. Reviews and inspects fire protection systems, as well as review building plans and sites for fire safety code compliance
8. Conducts assigned investigations within the City limits by interviewing parties and/or individuals, as well as investigating fire scenes to determine fire cause and origin preparing investigation reports
9. Performs all activities and duties of assigned station in the response to emergency or non- emergency activities 
10. Assists Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel 
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
  Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling and recommendation for dismissal.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of a variety of technical skills such as photography, communications, fire prevention and classroom instruction principles based on assignment.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and/or city ordinances and department policies and procedures as applied to  assigned work area.
Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and principles.
Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
Skill in basic computer and word processing programs, including Word, Exchange, and Excel.
Skill in collecting, analyzing, and interpreting applicable research data.
Skill in presenting the necessary components of fire operations to the general public.
Skill in oral and written communication including presentations.
Skill in planning, organizing and directing the work of others.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Ability to train others.
Ability to analyze and resolve irregular events.
Ability to maintain current required licenses and certifications.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
Four (4) years of service from date of commission in the Austin Fire Department, including a minimum of two (2) years at the Fire Specialist rank.
Eligible to promote to Fire Lieutenant with completion of all appropriate Civil Service examinations.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
Valid and current Texas driver's license.  
Current Firefighter/EMT certifications and credentialing by the Office of the Medical Director.
Fire Inspector certification.
Fire Officer I certification within one (1) year of promotion.
