Park Ranger II

Purpose:
 

Under limited supervision, acts as an ambassador for City of Austin parks and its facilities by ensuring a safe and pleasant environment for park patrons. 

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1.  Leads and participates in collateral duty committees and Ranger educational programs.
2.  Gathers and organizes reports for submission to supervisor; prepares management reports, policies, and programmatic documentation.
3.  Patrols and monitors park areas for damage to grounds and reports incidents to appropriate personnel.
4.  Provides customer service and Ranger I support acting as a source of information and assistance to inform the public of amenities, rules, regulations, laws, ordinances, and municipal codes.
5.  Assists first responder agencies, provides first aid and determines need for and requests emergency services.
6.  Issues notices of park exclusions for violations and determines need for and calls for police assistance. 
7.  Anticipates and solves problems and/or provides reports to appropriate agency.
8.  Organizes and administers educational programs for the public.

  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
• Knowledge of City safety rules, regulations, laws, ordinances and municipal codes
• Knowledge of applicable processes, techniques and methods.
• Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
• Knowledge of basic computer programs and applications.
• Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
• Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
• Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
• Skill in leadership and supervising small groups.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.
• Ability to multi-task, work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
• Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions.
• Ability to learn different skills and apply them to various job functions.
• Ability to maintain Division mandated physical requirements
• Ability to swim at a basic skill level in open water environment
• Ability to undergo self-defense training to include various standard techniques and methods.
Minimum Qualifications:
 

Graduation from a two-year college or university plus one (1) year experience as a Park Ranger

Related experience may substitute for education up to two (2) years

Completion of the Park Ranger Intermediate Coursework, and meeting of Park Ranger II physical fitness requirements within six (6) months of hire date

Licenses and Certifications Required:
 

Requires a valid Texas Driver License.
