Assistant Division Manager, Environmental Health Assistant

Purpose:
 

Under general direction, is responsible for providing oversight to Environmental Health Services programs and personnel to include: city consumer and environmental health, county environmental and consumer health, food manager/food handler registration and mobile/temporary events.

 
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

 

  1. Monitors budget expenditures, revenues and performance measures.
  2. Develops/evaluates plans and ensures criteria are met for a variety of Environmental Health projects, programs, and activities.
  3. Develops strategic short/long range business plans.
  4. Coordinates facility activities within division program area. Coordinates environmental health activities with other departments.
  5. Coordinates quality assurance activities with outside consultants, associations, regulatory agencies, neighborhood associations, general public.
  6. Evaluates programs for effectiveness and accomplishment of departmental and divisional goals.
  7. Interprets, explains, and enforces applicable policies, procedures, and regulations and revises operational standards and operating procedures.
  8. Coordinates as a liaison for interdepartmental and interagency issues, projects, and protocols.
  9. Provides technical advice and assistance to internal and external customers.

 

Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
 

 

  • Responsible for the full range of managerial duties including planning and oversight of Division Programs and Supervisors; managing supervisor performance through selection, planning, coaching, evaluation and disciplining direct reports, to include recommendation for dismissal.  

 

 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

 

  • Knowledge of Environmental Health Services operations, techniques, and processes.
  • Knowledge of City of Austin budget process and performance measures.
  • Knowledge of health industry and operations.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting and/or bookkeeping procedures.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and management techniques.
  • Skill in communicating orally and in writing
  • Skill in determining needs, gathering, analyzing and presenting data to provide accurate information for management's use.
  • Skill in identifying and assessing potential process improvements.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to resolve complex problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.
  • Ability to understand and explain industry trends, processes, and procedures.
  • Ability to manage multiple programs, projects, and tasks

 

 
Minimum Qualifications:
 

 

  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least thirty (30)   semester hours of natural or basic Science.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in the field of Environmental Health, two (2) years of which was in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Master's degree in a related field may substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Registered in the State of Texas as a Professional Sanitarian.

 

 
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 

 

  • Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License.
  • State of Texas Professional Sanitarian Registration
