Austin Energy Communications Director

Purpose:
 

Under nominal direction, responsible for all communications internal to Austin Energy; external communications with the media and the general public; marketing and advertising campaigns and materials; and supervision of AE corporate communications staff..

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Develop and oversee implementation of an integrated organizational communications plan, aligning Austin Energy’s campaigns, publications, social media, and events with organizational strategic objectives.
  2. Develop and maintain Austin Energy’s emergency communications plan.  Manage emergency communications in cases of emergency events.
  3. Manage AE corporate communications staff.  Provide leadership and oversight;  responsible for planning, coordination, review and feedback within Austin Energy corporate communications.
  4. Oversee and manage Austin Energy’s public information function;  responsible for all Austin Energy publications;  responsible for media planning, management, and relationships.
  5. Oversee and manage Austin Energy’s marketing and advertising campaign development and execution;  oversee planning and execution of community outreach events.
  6. Collaborate throughout Austin Energy with programmatic staff in developing communications (e.g., letters, memos, announcements) for customers, community partners, vendors/contractors, and other audiences.
  7. Oversee development of Austin Energy design standards;  responsible for disseminating standards throughout Austin Energy.
  8. Develop and monitor assigned budgets.  Recommend major purchases and expenditures.
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
 
  • Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of strategic communications planning
  • Knowledge of management practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws, ordinances, policies.
  • Knowledge of journalistic writing and editing techniques.
  • Knowledge of marketing and promotion of products and events.
  • Knowledge of budgeting methods and systems.
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Skill in managing conflict and uncertain situations.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the media, the public and staff.
  • Skill in collecting, analyzing and interpreting applicable research data.
  • Ability to mentor and train others.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to collaborate with a wide variety of colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve irregular events.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Communication, Journalism, Public Information or related field, plus six (6) years of public information activities, two (2) years of which were in a supervisory or management capacity.
  • A Master's degree may substitute for two (2)  of the non-managerial experience.
