Epidemiologist

Purpose:
 

Under general direction, investigate, interpret, and report information about diseases and other public health issues in the community.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Assists in data collection, assessment, and evaluation process in community health planning for the department.
  2. Establishes, maintains, and improves databases on adverse health conditions.
  3. Develops, analyzes, and reports strategic health indicators for the community. Plans, develops, directs, and coordinates epidemiologic studies and investigations.
  4. Analyzes and interprets data.
  5. Prepares reports on epidemiologic investigations.
  6. Explores linkages between diseases, conditions, and risk factors in the community.
  7. Creates summaries/briefs and comprehensive reports for periodic release, focused on examining recent data on disease burden in the community, risk factors, and health inequities.
  8. Participates in the community assessment process to identify key health indicators and develop on-going assessment activities.
  9. Responds to inquiries from the public on information related to adverse health conditions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

• Knowledge of current epidemiological, biostatistics principles, and practices.
• Knowledge of computerized database and statistical software.
• Knowledge of organization and administration of public health programs.
• Knowledge of public health laws, ordinances, policies, procedures, rules and regulations and basic medical terminology.
• Knowledge of current cultural, social, economic, and public health issues and community demographics.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships.
• Skill in applying interviewing and assessment technique for case investigations including culturally and socio-economically diverse populations.
• Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
• Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
• Ability to interact effectively and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, education, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds, managers, co-workers, and members of the public and professional groups.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality as required by HIPAA and other Texas privacy laws.

Minimum Qualifications:
 

Graduation with a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health (MPH) or closely related field with emphasis on epidemiology and/or biostatistics, plus one (1) year of experience in epidemiology, data management, infectious diseases, occupational diseases, environmental health, cancer, chronic diseases, reproductive health or other related field.
