Local Government Issues Director

Purpose:
 

Under nominal direction, this position serves as primary liaison for City Council, Local government agencies, and stakeholder outreach. This position manages the communication and workflow between Austin Energy (AE) and City Hall with regards to Local government initiatives. This position is responsible for supervising staff, managing programs, and implementing management directives, City Council initiatives, and energy policy.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Promotes AE’s mission, policy, and initiatives before Local agencies and organizations.
  2. Represents AE’s interests and positions before local governmental officials, boards, commissions, and community organizations.
  3. Serves as primary liaison and provides technical assistance to City Council.
  4. Participates in workshops, public hearings, stakeholder processes, and team meetings as AE’s representative.
  5. Provides leadership, insight, and concepts in public and community relation activities and stakeholder outreach.
  6. Researches and drafts documents for presentation and publication.
  7. Prepares status reports on City Council and other various assigned projects and brief executive management.
  8. Represents AE before various formal and informal groups requesting information, including City Councils and officials of cities served by AE and other governmental bodies, on Austin Energy programs, policies, or processes.
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
 

Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.

  • Knowledge of legislative and governmental processes.

  • Knowledge of City practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of governmental (Federal, State, and Local) relationships and processes.

Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Business, Public Affairs, Public Policy, Public Administration, Education, Law or in a field related to the job, plus seven (7) years of experience in a field related to working with Local elected officials, including two (2) years of experience which were in a lead, program lead, or supervisory capacity.
  • Graduation with a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for non-lead or non-supervisory experience up to a maximum of two (2) years.
