Purpose:
  Under general supervision using working knowledge of technical concepts, practices, and procedures of technical engineering and drafting support functions, evaluate a variety of moderately complex engineering and drafting support functions. With minimum supervision, may deviate from established practices and procedures in resolving problems where independent judgment is required to provide routine recommendations.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Review permits/applications and plats within the City of Austin design manuals and standards including generally accepted practices by ensuring applicable information is included.
  2. Assist in the development of technical reports by performing research and gathering applicable and supporting data.
  3. Inspect projects for compliance within standards and specification of the contract and within the City of Austin design manuals and standards.
  4. Assist in the design of engineering projects by performing detail engineering calculations and drawings to meet standards and specifications. Draft for scope and review and approval. Perform CAD drawings of project elements for review. Prepare plans and specifications. Assist in the preparation of engineering specifications and plans by determining the appropriate standards and specifications.
  5. Assist with processing bids in the review of all bid packages prepared by consultants, attend pre-bid conferences, analyzes bid results, prepare detailed results for evaluation.
  6. Perform equipment evaluations calibration to ensure valid results.
  7. Operate computerized drafting software within the scope of project assignment.
  8. Prepare cost estimates using historical data and working knowledge to determine bid items. Determine bid items. Calculate quantities and prepare estimate for review.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles.
  • Knowledge of engineering terminology and techniques.
  • Knowledge of various phases of the plans review and inspections processes.
  • Knowledge of various computer software programs
  • Knowledge of preparation of cost estimates
  • Skill in oral and written technical and/or general communication
  • Ability to perform simple engineering computations, including basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to Read and update quarter-section maps.
  • Ability to Read and comprehend simple specifications, plans, and shop drawings.
  • Ability to Interpret and make decisions in conformance within established policies and practices.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years of relevant work experience
  • Education may substitute for experience up to two (2) years
