Environmental Health Technician

Purpose:
  Perform environmental inspections of public and private property to enforce public laws, codes, ordinances and regulations related to environmental health, safety, and sanitary control. Take necessary action to prevent or control insect and rodent activity. Respond to complaints regarding tall weeds and grass, rubbish or debris, and stagnant water and initiate legal action for correction.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Inspect public and private facilities and premises for rodent and insect infestations
  2. Inspect public and private facilities and premises for violations of City ordinances and regulations regarding tall grass and weeds, rubbish or debris and other hazards
  3. Set mechanical traps and/or bait to trap rodents
  4. Conduct rodent and vector control needs assessments by surveying public and property
  5. Provide consultation and public education concerning private methods of rodent and vector control, and city ordinance requirements relating to sanitary standards
  6. Administer insecticides and pesticides
  7. Issue and/or post notices of violations or/or citations for violations of City ordinances and regulations
  8. Record data on appropriate form/log and prepare basic correspondence, memos and reports
  9. Calibrate and record calibration of machinery and insecticides
  10. Read and interpret land and utility maps in order to conduct accurate inspections
  11. Maintain complete and accurate records
  12. Post signs
  13. Research tax, utility and/or other records to determine property ownership
  14. Drive vehicles as needed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of applicable processes, techniques, and methods.
Knowledge of city practice, policy, and procedures.
Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in using computers and related software applications.
Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year experience in a field related to environmental health
  • Thirty (30) semester hours of college level work may substitute for one (1) year
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • Current Texas Class C Driver's License.
  • Current Texas Department of Health Pesticide Applicator License or obtain within six (6) month of employment, if applicable.
