Medical Assistant

Purpose:
 
Under general supervision, performs selected clinical duties that are under the 
delegation of the Physician or Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant, and RN according to their own scope of practice and under the rules and regulations of their respective licensing authority.  Performs administrative/clerical duties and basic patient care.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Follows customer service and service excellence guidelines during interactions with all internal and external customers including patients, co-workers and providers.
2. Collects, reports and documents data during patient intake including, but not limited to: patient’s chief complaint, vital signs, height, weight, BMI, head circumference, current medications, pulse oximetry level and patient comfort level.
3. Collects, performs, documents and reports results of CLIA waived lab tests including, but not limited to: urine dip, pregnancy tests, fingerstick blood glucose levels, fecal occult blood tests, hematocrits and rapid strep tests.
4. Collects, prepares and documents specimen collection including, but not limited to; blood, urine, stool, sputum and tissue.
5. Performs clinical duties as assigned including, but not limited to: preparing patients for examinations and /or treatments, assisting provider with exams or procedures, setting up exam or procedure rooms and cleaning and sterilization of instruments. 
6. Performs advanced clinical duties as assigned including, but not limited to: blood, urine, stool, sputum and tissue.
7. Performs clerical duties including, but not limited to: appointment scheduling, answering and directing telephone calls to appropriate parties, taking messages and returning calls, maintaining medical records, filing patient charts, composing and typing general correspondence using correct medical terminology, using office equipment such as copier, fax machine and computers.
8. Maintains par-level stocking of exam and procedure rooms, as well as inventory management of medical supplies.
9. Performs selected clerical duties including but not limited to: appointment scheduling, answering and directing telephone calls to appropriate parties, taking messages and returning calls, maintaining medical records, filing patient charts, composing and typing general correspondence using correct medical terminology, using office equipment such as copier, fax machine, and computers.
10. Maintains par-level stocking of exam and procedure rooms, as well as inventory management of medical and office supplies.  Identify, label and report equipment malfunctions.
11. Maintains a clean, safe and orderly work environment and performs duties in a safe manner according to clinic policies and procedures.
12. Provides care in a caring, nonjudgmental, nondiscriminatory manner.
13. Participate in implementing changes that lead to improvements in the work setting.

  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of asepsis and infection control.
Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology of all body systems
Knowledge of common pathology and diseases.
Knowledge of diagnostic/treatment modalities within scope of practice.
Knowledge of the operation of clinical medical equipment.
Skill in application of medical terminology in oral and written communication.
Skill in using computers and related software applications.
Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.
Skill in communicating verbally and in writing.
Skill in specimen collection and processing.
Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Ability to learn documentation and retrieval of data within an electronic medical record.

Minimum Qualifications:
  Graduation from a high school or equivalent. 
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
Diploma or certificate verifying graduation from a Medical Assistant Program 
accredited by the (CAAHEP) or (ABHES).
Current CPR certification within four weeks of date of hire.
Must successfully pass a Medical Assistant examination during initial trainings.
