Purpose:
 

Under general supervision, this position is responsible for high level radio dispatching calls for police service and for making accurate and concise data updates to the Computer Aided Dispatch computer system. Using independent judgment and knowledge, leads the daily activities and operations of police dispatch personnel in the Emergency Communications Center.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Records shift activity data for operational tracking.
  2. Receives coded information requesting police investigation from 911 to responsible field units including vehicle, motorcycle, and helicopter.
  3. Operates Police Emergency Radio System in accordance with FCC rules and regulations.
  4. Operates computer for quick and accurate entries.
  5. Maintains constant awareness of status of mobile units and update information as it changes.
  6. Receives radio calls from field units, transmits messages via radio or telephone using a Computer Aided Dispatch/Mobile Data Terminal computer system.
  7. Updates information on an ongoing basis to ensure all documentation is accurate and concise.
  8. Records data concerning shift activities to track operational activities.
  9. Assists and mentors less tenured staff as needed, assists staff in resolving complex or escalated calls and acts in the role of a 911 call taker when requested.
  10. Acts as a Lead or Trainer as directed, leading the daily activities and operations of dispatchers and 911 call takers and ensuring they are in compliance with policies and procedures, facilitating communication and coordinating services between stakeholders to support continuum of services.
  11. Ensures emergency communications equipment is in proper working order at all times.
  12. Coordinates response with other public safety agencies as needed.
  13. Develops and maintains a working knowledge of all positions in the Police Emergency Communications Center.

  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of the operations of a Police Emergency Communications Center.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to work in close quarters and to wear a telephone headset.
  • Ability to apply telephone interviewing techniques.
  • Ability to quickly and accurately obtain appropriate information.
  • Ability to learn and communicate medical emergency pre-arrival instructions (EMD).
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public and others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with City employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus four (4) years of experience as an emergency services dispatcher and/or 911 Call Taker; 1 year of which is in a City of Austin Police Dispatcher role.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • Current Advanced level or higher TCOLE Certification and TCIC/NCIC certification. Must be currently crossed trained as a 911 Operator and Police Dispatcher.
