Crime Scene Specialist Senior

Purpose:
 

Under general supervision, uses broad, comprehensive knowledge, and standardized principles, practices, and procedures, in the identification, documentation, collection, preservation, processing, and/or handling of evidence at/from crime scenes. 

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Responds to crime and accident scenes, evaluates the scene and conducts searches for evidence utilizing disciplines related to crime scene investigation.  
  2. Measures and/or photographs crime scenes, evidence, etc.  Documents, collects, packages, preserves, and processes evidence.  
  3. Utilizes alternate light sources, chemical and physical processes, scientific methods and equipment for the detection and collection of evidence.
  4. Processes evidence and crime scenes for latent fingerprints, utilizing both chemical and powder processes.  
  5. Writes, drafts, and completes reports and/or documentation of work completed.  
  6. Enters and modifies information in Versadex and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  7. Assists other law enforcement agencies with crime scene processing
  8. Testifies as an expert witness in court regarding analysis and procedures, after being declared by the judge, an expert in their field of crime scene investigation.
  9. Attends autopsies to photograph and process the deceased for evidence.
  10. Assists with crime scene reconstruction including determining the sequence of events that took place, bullet trajectory and identifying blood stain patterns to aid in blood stain analysis.
  11. Provides aerial photography at crime scenes and performs specialized photography using the alternate light source. 
  12. Conducts administrative and/or technical reviews of personnel casework to ensure compliance with division practice, policy, and procedure.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of strategic and administrative crime analysis.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in using computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to quickly recognize and analyze irregular events.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.
  • Ability to successfully complete two years of proficiency testing.
  • Ability to successfully complete three years of approved casework.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Criminal Justice, Science, or in a field related to the job, plus three (3) years of experience in crime scene investigation, in a crime laboratory, or in law enforcement, excluding training.
  • Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • International Association for Identification Crime Scene Technician Certification (CCSI)
  • Successful completion of two (2) years of approved proficiency testing.
  • Successful completion of three (3) years of approved casework.
  • Valid Driver License
