Crime Scene Unit Supervisor

Purpose:
 
Under general direction, supervise and coordinate the daily activities of personnel in support of the Crime Scene Unit of the Identification Section.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Participates in the development and implementation of new programs.
  2. Establishes, reviews, and interprets standard operating practice, policy, and procedure.
  3. Assists in establishing crime scene and evidence guidelines.
  4. Assists in reviewing and maintaining the laws regulating chain of custody and crime scene investigation to include latent prints.
  5. Assists in preparing budget and other planning documents.
  6. Performs bid processing and prepares purchase orders for supplies and/or equipment.
  7. Conducts needs assessments and new employee orientation.
  8. Establishes, writes, and provides training programs and policies for staff.
  9. Coordinates and implements assigned projects.
  10. Coordinates crime scene calls and ensures appropriate personnel response.
  11. Coordinates information for court cases with court officers, prosecutors, and judges.
  12. Assists other law enforcement agencies and city departments.
  13. Writes, drafts, and completes reports and/or documents.
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
 
  • Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of city practice, policy, procedure, statutes, and ordinances. 
  • Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and principles. 
  • Skill in oral and written communications.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software applications. Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities. Ability to train others.
  • Ability to quickly recognize and analyze irregular events.

Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, plus three (3) years’ experience in crime scene investigation.
  • Education or experience may be substituted up to a maximum of four (4) years. 
  • Must possess the following skills or certifications:
 
  1. Successful completion of at least one year of approved proficiency testing.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License
