Energy Planner

Purpose:
  Under close supervision, performs a variety of tasks related to the planning, scheduling and dispatching of fuel and electrical energy sales, purchases and transportation and related hedging transactions.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Assists with short and long-term electric energy and fuel projections. Assists with forecasting daily wholesale power and fuel prices and market trends. Assists with daily, monthly and other purchases or sales of wholesale power, fuel and hedging transactions
  2. Nominates / schedules daily wholesale power and natural gas purchase and transportation volumes. Monitors daily natural gas consumption and re-nominates as needed. Monitors and controls natural gas transportation imbalance accounts
  3. Supports QSE functions including submission and confirmation of balanced schedules and ancillary service bids to ERCOT. Supports ERCOT market design and development process.
  4. Monitors and coordinates generating unit status and performance among affected parties
  5. Enters and tracks data on wholesale power, fuel and hedging transactions
  6. Assists with generation and hedging simulation modeling and model upkeep. Assists with generating unit forced outage analysis
  7. Conducts research and assists with data requests, analyses and forecasts as needed
  8. Applies new technology to improve processes and communications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of Austin Energy's wholesale fuel and energy requirements
  • Knowledge of applicable processes, techniques, and methods.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, Local laws, and ordinances governing fuel and energy markets.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to quickly recognize and analyze irregular events.
  • Ability to cross train in related areas
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Experience may substitute for education up to four (4) years
