Power Plant Operator Supervisor

Purpose:
  Under general direction, supervise activities of personnel at a power generating station during a specified shift including the operations, safety and security of the plant. In the absence of regular site management, assumes responsibility for immediate site and auxiliary sites related to the operations, safety and security of the plant.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Coordinates with other plant supervisors regarding day to day or emergency operating conditions. Coordinates plant activities with other divisions, emergency response agencies and other external agencies under emergency situations e.g. flood, fire, security breech etc.
  2. Checks equipment for proper operations, safety, and needed maintenance.
  3. Enforces safety rules.
  4. Interprets, explains and enforces City policies and procedures related to the operations, safety and security of the plant.
  5. Orders and issue supplies, parts, etc.
  6. Writes daily, weekly, or monthly activity reports.
  7. Ensures proper and safe operation and maintenance of plant systems, e.g., electrical, protection, mechanical, etc.
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
 
  • Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of theory and relationships between components in power generation process.
  • Knowledge of proper safety practices, procedures and regulations applicable to work being performed.
  • Knowledge of the equipment, methods, and materials used in repairing and maintaining facilities.
  • Knowledge of boiler, turbine, and generator controls in a power plant environment.
  • Knowledge of various auxiliary controls related to power production.
  • Skill in working from drawings, blueprints, plans and specifications.
  • Skill in reading instruments, charts, and schematic drawings.
  • Skill in interpreting and analyzing applicable data.
  • Skill in the supervision of personnel.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
  • Skill in developing and implementing short-term plans.
  • Skill in selecting, training, and directing subordinates.
  • Skill in directing personnel in operations including difficult public situations.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, and monitoring subordinate employee work assignments to accomplish unit objectives.
  • Skill in maintaining high performance standards for subordinates.
  • Skill in resolving problems or situations requiring the exercise of good judgment.
  • Skill in anticipating and accurately predicting the results of alternate courses of action.
  • Skill in preparing clear and concise written reports.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years experience in a field related to the job, one year in a lead or supervisory capacity.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  None.
Physical Requirements:
  Light. Tasks performed with lightweight materials or using a force equal to lifting up to twenty pounds. Must be able to work 12 hour rotating shift schedule.
