Purpose: |
|
Under general direction, performs skilled and specialized assembly, repair, maintenance, and upgrades of personal protective equipment (PPE) or pneumatic, hydraulic, and electromechanical equipment, including decontamination. |
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: |
|
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Schedules and maintains documentation of required testing of protective equipment. Documents and photographs any potential PPE related injury as the initial steps in the workers’ compensation or other regulatory investigations.
- Performs preventative maintenance on, and repairs and tests protective equipment using specialized equipment to ensure safe and operational equipment.
- Adheres to manufacturer's requirements for testing, repairs, and preventative maintenance on all protective equipment.
- Obtains and maintains certification for all protective equipment used through manufacturer-approved vendors.
- Conducts training for personnel in proper field maintenance procedures, and the proper use of protective equipment according to safety and manufacturer's guidelines.
- Conducts routine inspections. Performs, as necessary, modification or refurbishment of equipment.
- Performs decontamination and inspection of PPE after hours as needed to remove carcinogens or pathogens.
- Maintains technical data on equipment to be serviced. Monitors contracted maintenance services.
- Maintains inventory and monitors replacement orders for required parts and supplies.
- Drives regularly between locations to facilitate timely PPE exchanges.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: |
|
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
- Knowledge of protective equipment performance standards and repair techniques.
- Knowledge of operational function of equipment to be assembled, repaired or maintained.
- Knowledge of basic inventory and record keeping.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in performing equipment and component repair.
- Knowledge of Federal guidelines concerning protective equipment requirements, and if applicable, Texas Fire Commission codes, and National Fire Protection Association codes.
- Knowledge of Federal guidelines (OSHA, DOT, Manufacturer Specifications) concerning protective equipment requirements.
- Knowledge of city streets and fire stations or other work locations.
- Skill in specialized work requiring mechanical aptitude.
- Skill in maintaining effective working relationships with other City employees, contractors, and the general public.
- Skill in tracking and executing periodic maintenance schedules.
- Skill in reading and following written specifications or procedures for assembly or repair.
- Skill in recording repairs and maintenance performed.
- Skill in using an industrial sewing machine to repair damaged PPE and return it to applicable standards.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to diagnose and repair life support equipment.
- Ability to use hand tools and standard and specialized measuring or testing equipment.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to train employees in complex repair and maintenance procedures.
- Ability to participate in on-call duties after normal work hours.
- Ability to use an ultrasonic cleaner including the ability to measure pH levels and adjust or replace the cleaning fluid per manufacturer’s guidelines.
- Ability to operate the extractors and use the associated cleaners as necessary.
- Ability to operate the pneumatic boot and helmet dryer.
- Ability to operate the Hydro II portable moisture barrier tester to ensure the integrity of the PPE.

Minimum Qualifications: |
|
- Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years of related experience in repair and/or maintenance of protective equipment or pneumatic, hydraulic, electromechanical, SCBA, and safety-related parts and equipment,
- Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years.

Licenses and Certifications Required: |
|
- Valid Texas Driver License
- Must be able to obtain the vendor certification within eight (8) months of acceptance of position.
