Property Crime Technician Senior

Purpose:
  Under the direction of the Crime Scene Section Supervisor, follows standardized principles, practices, and procedures in the identification, documentation, collection, preservation, processing, and/or handling of evidence at/from crime scenes. 
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1. Responds to property crime scenes, evaluates the scene and conducts searches for evidence utilizing disciplines related to crime scene investigation. 
2. Documents, collects, packages, preserves, and processes evidence.
3. Detects and collects trace evidence using special processes, methods, and equipment.
4. Processes evidence and crime scenes for latent fingerprints, utilizing both chemical and powder processes. 
5. Writes, drafts, and completes reports and/or documentation of work completed.
6. Enters and modifies information in Versadex and LIMS.
7. Assists in gathering property crime statistics for the crime analysis section in developing criminal patterns.
8. Assists other law enforcement agencies with property crime processing.
9. Testifies as an expert witness in court regarding analysis and procedures after being declared by the judge to be an expert in the field of crime scene investigation.
10. Reviews casework of personnel to ensure compliance with division practice, policy, and procedure.
11. Ensures the proper functioning of vehicles, equipment and supplies using established quality assurance standards and requirements.

  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Comprehensive knowledge of strategic and administrative crime analysis.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in using computers and related software applications.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Ability to quickly recognize and analyze irregular events.
Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
 

Associate Degree from an accredited four-year college, university or community college, with major coursework in Police Science or in a field related to the job, plus two (2) years related experience.

Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of two (2) years.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
 

Must possess the following skills or certifications:

1. Qualified to testify as an expert witness regarding latent print development, crime scene investigation, and evidence collection, in State, District, or Federal court.
2. Two years of approved casework in the field of property crime investigation.
3. Satisfactory completion of at least two years of approved competency/proficiency testing.

Licenses or Certifications Required:

IAI Level I - Crime Scene Technician Certification
Valid Drivers License
