Park Ranger Supervisor

Purpose:
 

Under general direction provide supervision of the Park Rangers, providing a visible public safety presence in the City of Austin parkland, recreational facilities, and trails.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1.  Resolves difficult situations involving citizen complaints.  Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide seamless customer service.
2.  Coordinates training and development for assigned staff.
3.  Issues and monitors equipment for assigned staff (radios, bikes, uniforms, etc.).
4.  Patrols park facilities for unsafe and deteriorating conditions in City of Austin parks and facilities by foot and bicycle.  Monitors park areas for damage to grounds and facilities and reports incidents to appropriate personnel.
5.  Anticipates and solves problems, educating rule violators on park safety rules and regulations.
6.  Issues notices of park exclusions for violations and calls for police assistance as needed.  Completes corresponding incident reports as necessary.
7.  Assists in preparation of the budget, and ensures division operates within appropriated budget. Performs bid processing and prepare purchase orders for supplies and/or equipment. Prepares technical and activity reports.
8.  Provides first aid and emergency response as well as requests Emergency Medical Services when appropriate. Communicates with MHMR Access Unit and Travis County Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT) regarding individuals needing assistance.
9.  Attends meetings with neighborhood associations, Austin Police Department, and others.
10.  Directs the Park Ranger’s daily activities to ensure maximal effectiveness based on current trends and circumstances.

• Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.

  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

• Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and principles.
• Knowledge of city practice, policy, and procedure, statutes and ordinances pertaining to municipal parks.
• Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques used in park maintenance.
• Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions applicable to park environment.
• Knowledge of native flora and fauna and relevant Texas history.
• Knowledge of geography, geology, climate and natural history.
• Skill in oral and written communication.
• Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
• Skill in using computers and related software applications.
• Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
• Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
• Ability to train others.
• Ability to quickly recognize and analyze irregular events.
• Ability to swim at a basic skill level in open water environment.
• Ability to undergo self-defense training to include various standard techniques and methods.

Minimum Qualifications:
 

Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a field related to the job plus five (5) years of related experience, two (2) of which must have been in a lead, supervisory, or managing capacity. Experience may substitute for education up to four (4) years.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
 

Requires a valid Texas Driver License.
