Green Building and Sustainability Consultant Senior

Purpose:
 

Under minimal supervision, responsible for providing project and program consulting services to builders, developers, contractors, and the general public in support of Austin Energy’s Green Building and Sustainability initiatives.  This position provides highly technical, educational, and mentoring services and support to the Austin Energy Green Building and Sustainability employees and their customers.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1. Develops educational, informational, and marketing materials to promote green building and sustainability initiatives to enhance the focus on conservation and life-cycle approaches to sustainable building construction, energy efficiency, water conservation, and the efficient use of materials and natural resources. 
2. Forms partnerships with professional associations such as Home Builders Association of Greater Austin, American Institute of Architects, and Austin Board of Realtors, Envision Central Texas, TX Nursery and Landscape Association, to develop educational series, seminars, and luncheons to promote understanding and cooperation.  Fosters on-going relationships with all stakeholders to facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of green building and sustainability processes and procedures associated with the administration of building energy codes.
3. Provides green building and sustainability consulting services to residential, multi-family, and commercial design teams, builders, developers, contractors and trades to facilitate the design and construction of buildings that meet the highest levels of energy, water, and resource efficiency.  Develops and presents alternatives, makes recommendations and provides assistance in resolving technical issues.
4. Develops technical program activities to support the Austin Climate Protection Plan. 
5. Develops key program tools and program documents, ensuring the content, context, diagrams and data are clear, accurate, and updated. Ensures project documentation includes the proper information, and is in compliance with building standards and codes.  Drafts, writes and provides quality controls for technical deliverables, ensuring information integrity and public accessibility.
6. Develops, monitors, and promotes quality design, construction, and design standards from start to finish, working collaboratively to create actionable items, and opportunities for pursuing new construction projects using sustainable building materials, systems, and concepts. 
7. Conducts site visits and inspections at the different stages of construction to ensure buildings seeking a Green Building/Energy Star rating meet program standards and intent.
8. Coordinates and works with other city departments to ensure green building and sustainability data is captured in the permitting process.
9. Serves as a resource to coordinate locally available resources that promote the design and construction of sustainable buildings. Ensures program services meet the client’s needs. 
10. Assists applicants and various green building and sustainability related groups with the coordination of shared resources, and serves as a pivotal networking resource for various entities at all levels of government and in the private sector.

Knowledge of green building and sustainability construction technologies, methods and practices.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures
Knowledge of construction materials, practices and procedures.
Knowledge of customer service operations, techniques, and processes
Knowledge of the electric utility industry and business operations.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in using computers and related software applications.
Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
Ability to influence, persuade and market products and services to the building community. 
Ability to understand and explain industry trends, processes, and procedures.
Ability to read and understand construction documents, technical reports, and worksheets. 
Ability to manage multiple small programs and projects 
Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:
 

Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Architecture, Business, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, Construction Management, or in a field related to the job, plus five (5) years experience related to construction, energy efficiency, or green building. 
Masters degree may substitute for two (2) years of required experience.
