Fire Cadet Senior

Purpose:
 

Under close supervision, participate in training and formal academic programs of instruction designed to specifically apply previously acquired knowledge, skills and abilities of a certified Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT),

The Fire Chief shall establish the eligibility requirements for applicants for the lateral entry process. The requirements need not be the same as those established by Chapter 143 or those applicable to applicants for the position of Fire Cadet in the Department’s regular Training Academy. The requirements may be modified by the Fire Chief.

At the time of the application, each applicant must have been actively employed as a full-time paid structural fire fighter for one or more municipalities, ESD’s, military or county fire departments within the two years prior to the date of application, and must have a total of at least three years of active services as a fire fighter for one or more municipalities, ESD’s, military or county fire departments.

Austin-Travis County EMS employees who have structural fire fighting certification and three or more year’s prior experience with a fire department also qualify for the lateral entry program.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Participates in classroom lectures, response simulations, live field exercises, mandatory physical training and other orientation activities.
2. Studies and practices, as qualified, job related structural firefighting and basic emergency medical care methods according to established department rules, regulations, protocols and standards.  Includes but not limited to, fire and rescue tactics, patient care, safety and survival techniques, ladder operations and hose deployment, self contained breathing apparatus use, hazardous materials awareness, station and company familiarization, computer and communications systems procedures and incident reporting and administrative recordkeeping.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
• Knowledge of fire suppression and prevention principles, and related apparatus operations.. 
• Knowledge of fire hazards related to various types of construction and flammable materials.
• Knowledge of emergency medical care principles, drugs, and related apparatus operations.
• Knowledge of medical hazards related to patient care. 
• Ability to become knowledgeable of city geography, streets, and highways in Austin/Travis County. 
• Ability to become knowledgeable of departmental policy, practice, and procedure, emergency medical techniques, and good safety practice in the use of equipment. 
• Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public. 
• Ability to communicate effectively in stressful and /or hazardous environments. 
• Ability to perform strenuous work under all weather conditions including emergency situations. 
• Ability to read, write, comprehend, and speak English.

Minimum Qualifications:
  Minimum Qualifications: 
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
Must be 18 years of age.
Must have a verifiable Social Security Card.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  Valid Drivers License.
Currently certified as a Firefighter in Texas or obtain reciprocity as a Texas Commission on Fire Protection Firefighter by date specified on the job posting. 
Currently certified as an EMT-B in Texas or must obtain reciprocity as a Texas Department of Health and Human Services Certified EMT-B. Certifications must be in good standing with no deficiency status.
Physical Requirements:
  • Successful completion of a candidate physical ability test.
