Fleet Service Consultant

Purpose:
  Under general supervision, interacts with customer to determine scope of vehicle repair, prepares work orders and maintains records for repairs/maintenance/service of vehicles and equipment. This position is located in the Fleet division of the Financial Services Department.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Performs diagnosis of vehicle/equipment problems and determines need for vehicle repair through equipment testing/inspection
2. Creates itemized work order including diagnosis of problem and labor hours for repair/maintenance/service
3. Determines need and coordinates with outside vendors for parts and services
4. Communicates vehicle repair needs and time required to customers
5. Monitors work status and communicates with customers, user department and service center personnel regarding status of work
6. Communicates with customers to determine the nature of mechanical problems
7. Coordinates and schedules repair/maintenance/service with other departments/fleet liaisons
8. Ensures and facilitates road service, wrecker service and/or tire repair and maintains wrecker and service call logs
9. Manages on-site vehicle/equipment inventory and ensures all vehicles/equipment have an associated work order in the automated fleet management system
10. Maintains and produces vehicle and equipment repair/maintenance/service, down-time, productivity, and other reports as needed

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

• Knowledge of mechanical work and technical information on all vehicles serviced by the City of Austin
• Knowledge of Fleet operations including, quality control methods, job standards, processing of work orders, pricing, labor hours, and equipment and materials
• Skill in communicating complex, technical vehicle information to laypeople
• Skill in oral and written communication
• Skill in operating a computer and standard MS Office software including knowledge of databases and e-mail.
• Ability to interact with tact and courtesy and maintain a professional demeanor.
 Ability to understand and follow work-related directions or instructions

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus four (4) years of experience working in fleet operations performing general vehicle mechanical repairs and maintenance, one (1) year of which was in a lead capacity. 
• Combination of equivalent experience and education may substitute for the minimum qualifications.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Requires a Class C driver's license.
• May be required to obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 90 days of employment with the City
