WIC Lactation RN Supervisor

Purpose:
  Under general direction, supervise the activities of Mom’s Place WIC Breastfeeding Clinic and implement standards of care and guidelines required to assist breastfeeding mothers in all areas of breastfeeding support.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Plans and directs Mom’s Place services and Clinical Practicum and manages the operations of the Mom’s Place WIC Breastfeeding Clinic.
2. Provides lactation services to Mom’s place clients, answers the breastfeeding hotline and issues breastfeeding equipment (i.e. breast pumps, SNS apparatus, etc).
3. Maintains a regular follow-up system of continuing care for mothers and their infants that are referred from hospital and WIC staff.  Records participants progress/concerns according to established procedures/protocols.
4. Ensures clinic has adequate supply of breast pumps, breastfeeding aids, breastfeeding education materials, and office/medical supplies and accurate inventory maintained. .
5. Provides breastfeeding information and training to staff, pediatric residents, community organizations, and general public through presentations, media interviews, webinars and social media.
6. Coordinates WIC breastfeeding activities within local hospitals, health care providers and community organizations.
7. Develops work schedules and assignments.
8. Conducts monthly staff meetings and attends other meetings and trainings as required.
9. Compiles and submits reports and statistics related to Mom’s Place activities.
10. Interprets Federal, State, and City policies related to WIC and breastfeeding and monitors compliance.
11. Assists in budget development and monitoring.
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
  Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
• Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and principles. 
• Knowledge of breastfeeding physiology, anatomy, and counseling and training techniques. 
• Knowledge of Federal, State, City and local policies and regulations that pertain to WIC services, breastfeeding and lactation consultation.
• Knowledge of quality review practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of public health programs, social services and client needs.
• Skill in providing breastfeeding education and excellent customer service and support.
• Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
• Skill in using computers and related software applications (website, appointments, webinars, etc).
• Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
• Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
• Skill in engaging stakeholders and facilitating accurate requirements to capture and manage stakeholders’ and Program’s expectations.
• Ability to assess current operations on an ongoing basis.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.
• Ability to train others.
• Ability to interact effectively and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, education, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds; managers, co-workers, and members of the public and professional groups.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, plus four (4) years experience in breastfeeding and lactation consultation, one   (1) year of which was in a lead or supervisory capacity.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas (RN)
• Successful completion and registration as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
