Land Management Ranger

Under general supervision, monitors and reports unauthorized activities by patrolling and assisting with land management actions on Balcones Canyon Land Preserves and Water Quality Protection Lands.

1. Patrols vast area premises of land and report unauthorized activities. Issues unauthorized activity letters to warn of consequences of such activities. Safeguards and inspects property for damage, vandalism, trespassing, tampering with survey equipment, and illegal dumping.
2. Acts as a liaison with other law enforcement agencies, such as Austin Police Department, Travis County Sheriff, and game wardens.
3. Provides customer services to citizens by answering questions and addressing complaints.
4. Recommends procedures and policies to deter trespassers and littering.
5. Implements actions to manage populations of native and exotic wildlife on the wild lands. Conducts inventory and monitoring practices for wildlife populations and their habitats.
6. Operates and maintain firearms used for lethal population management actions for wildlife.
7. Assists with implementation of vegetation management practices.
8. Observes and documents maintenance needs for facilities including fences, roads, buildings, water wells, and other facilities.
9. Operates various tools and equipment needed to accomplish land maintenance activities.
10. Prepares routine and specialized reports.

• Knowledge of biology and land preservation.
• Knowledge of wildlife and habitat, especially white-tail deer and hogs.
• Knowledge of vegetation, other plant life, and local plant species.
• Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations.
• Knowledge of firearms and ability to safely demonstrate shooting ability.

• Ability to walk long distances on uneven terrain.
• Ability to stand, sit, bend, stoop, twist, push, pull, climb, kneel, crawl, hear and see clearly with or without corrective lenses/glasses.
• Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, unassisted.
• Ability to work in environments that may include hazardous conditions, walking in dense vegetation and exposure to extreme weather conditions.
• Ability to wear required PPE to include safety eyewear, footwear, head protection or hearing protection.
• Ability to work overtime or different shift when needed.
• Ability to work in confined spaces.
• Ability to meet and maintain driver eligibility standards detailed in the COA Driver Safety Program.

• Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Natural Resources Management, Rangeland Management, Wildlife Biology, Law Enforcement, or other related field.
• Experience or education may substitute for the minimum qualifications.

• May require a Texas non-commercial Pesticide Applicators License or be capable of obtaining one within six (6) months of employment.
• Must carry and maintain a Texas State Hunting License.
• Current Texas Class "C" Driver's License.
