Business Information Specialist

Purpose:
  Ensure the success of the City's small business development initiatives in the Economic Development Department
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Provides direct service and coaching to customers.
  2. Responds to customer's requests for information on assistance available for small businesses.
  3. Provides information to entrepreneurs and small business owners on participating in City development and redevelopment activities.
  4. Identifies and formulates solutions to barriers faced by citizens wanting to start or expand a small business in Austin.
  5. Responsible for ongoing operational functions or specific projects as an internal team leader, single point of contact, or department liaison to other City departments.
  6. Provides support to small business development educational programs and activities.
  7. Maintains and communicate small business assistance and counseling policies and procedures.
  8. Assists with presentations to citizen groups and/or City staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of small business development initiatives.
  • Knowledge of issues facing business owners.
  • Knowledge of business development programs.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and local laws.
  • Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Skill in exercising good judgment, tact and diplomacy in all public dealings.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting, Finance, Engineering, Architecture or other relevant field plus two (2) years experience in small business related fields, economic development related fields, or land development related fields.
  • Master's degree may substitute for two (2) years of experience.
  • Experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.
