Claims Investigator

Purpose:
  Under general direction or working independently investigates and processes claims against the City and makes recommendations to eliminate or deter future claims.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Investigates claims of property damage and personal injury involving the City of Austin.
  2. Investigates reports of premise defects, damages or other potential hazards.
  3. Negotiates settlement with claimants and/or attorneys.
  4. Recommends settlement amounts pending approval of litigation attorneys to settle personal injury and/or property damage claims.
  5. Identifies and advises appropriate departments of problems or situations which present a potential liability to the City.
  6. Responds to inquiries on the proper procedures to file a claim.
  7. Processes claims and maintain status files.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of investigative techniques.
  • Knowledge of insurance industry practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws.
  • Knowledge of city practice, policies and procedures.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in using computers and related software.
  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Ability to negotiate settlements with claimants and/or attorneys.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain case files.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus two (2) years of investigative experience relevant to claims of property damage, personal injury, liability, etc.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • Class C Driver's License
  • Texas Department of Insurance Adjuster's License - Property Damage or All Lines designation
