Fleet Equipment Technician I

Purpose:
 
Under close supervision, assists Equipment Technicians with tasks involving the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motorized equipment including, trailers maintained by Fleet Services.
 
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Refuels and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of types of vehicles and other equipment.
2. Changes all type of tires and perform repairs to small tires.
3. Lubricates vehicles and changes oil and filters.
4. Initiates minor repairs and changes belts, hoses, windshield wipers, etc.
5.Records maintenance and service information and data on designated forms.
6. Transports vehicles of all types including heavy vehicles.
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
  None.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of vehicle mechanical work.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to use tools effectively in repair of equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand vehicle service manuals and lubrication charts.
  • Ability to follow proper safety practices and procedures necessary to operate various types of equipment.
  • Ability to interact with tact and courtesy and maintain a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus six (6) months of experience in a related field. 
  • Experience may substitute for education up to a maximum of four (4) years
  • Completion of an accredited automotive, diesel or related certification program or an Associate’ degree from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for required experience up to a maximum of six (6) months.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • Required a Class "C" Driver's License. 
  • If required, must obtain an appropriate Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within ninety (90) days of employment with the City.
