Equipment Mechanic II

Purpose:
  Under general supervision, perform skilled and specialized mechanical repairs on vehicles motorized equipment and trailers used in city operations.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Checks/services vehicles.
2. Performs tune-ups and overhauls on gasoline and diesel engines.
3. Disassembles, repairs and/or services, reassemble and reinstall vehicle accessories and systems (brake systems,    transmissions, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, cooling/radiator systems, air conditioning systems, starters and pumps).
4 Operates acetylene torch.
5. Performs basic wheel alignments.
6. Diagnoses problems; performs maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment such as crawler loader, backhoes and bulldozers.
7. Records maintenance and service data on appropriate forms and make computer entries of work performed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of the methods, equipment and materials used in repair and servicing of automobiles, motorized heavy equipment and trailers.
Knowledge of motorized electrical and hydraulic systems.
Knowledge of various types of automotive diagnostic testing and analysis equipment and other tools used in vehicle equipment service and maintenance.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures. .
Skill in oral and written communication
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in planning and organizing.
Skill in using computers and related software applications.
Ability to diagnose repairs and service needs of automotive, motorized heavy equipment and trailers.
Ability to use of automotive hand and power tools.
Ability to perform complex automotive repair and diagnostic equipment.
Ability to read and comprehend vehicle service, maintenance, technical and parts manuals.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
Ability to understand and follow directions.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus three (3) years experience in general mechanical automotive repairs.

Any combination of related education and/or work experience may substitute for one year of required experience with a maximum substitution of three (3) years.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
Class "C" driver's license. If required, must obtain an appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL) within 90 days of employment with the City.

If required by the assignment,  must be certified within six (6) months of employment in accordance with EPA standards in air conditioning service, repairs and Freon recovery to include Freon recovery equipment operations.

If required by the assignment,  must be certified within six (6) months of employment as a state vehicle inspector in accordance with TDPS procedures and regulations.
