Equipment Mechanic Senior

Purpose:
  Under general supervision, perform skilled and specialized mechanical repairs on vehicles, motorized equipment and trailers used in city operation. Perform functions as leader or acting supervisor as needed.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Checks and service vehicles.
2. Performs complex gasoline and diesel engine tune-ups and overhauls.
3. Disassembles, repairs, services, reassembles and reinstalls vehicle accessories and systems (brake systems, transmissions, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, cooling/radiator systems, air conditioning, suspension systems, vehicle generators, carburetors/fuel injection systems, starters and pumps).
4. Operates acetylene torch and various types of welding equipment and produce quality welding.
5. Performs wheel alignments on all types of vehicles and equipment items.
6. Diagnoses problems, perform maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment such as crawler loaders, backhoes and bulldozers.
7. Record maintenance and service data on appropriate forms and make computer entries or work performed.
8. Participate in creating a fleet business environment by assisting in customer contracting and negotiation issues, establish and maintain job standards and work with fellow technicians to establish and maintain work teams.
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
  Serve in a lead and training capacity when required.
Ability to serve as a facility liaison in-lieu of the facility's management
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of modern technical and mechanical fleet operations and services.
Knowledge of tasks required in a fleet business environment including work teams and job flat rate productivity standards.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
Knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws.
Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Ability to read and comprehend vehicle/equipment service, maintenance, technical and parts manuals.
Ability to understand and follow directions.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
Ability to diagnose repairs and service needs of automotive, motorized equipment and trailers.
Ability to use of automotive repair hand and power tool and complex vehicle repair and diagnostic equipment.
Ability to train others.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities
Minimum Qualifications:
  Class "C" Driver's license. If required, must obtain an appropriate commercial Driver's license (CDL) with in 90 days of employment with the city.

Must be certified within six (6) months of employment in accordance with EPA standards in air conditioning service, repairs and Freon recovery to include Freon recovery equipment operations.

Must be certified within six (6) months of employment as a State vehicle inspector in accordance with TDPS procedures and regulations.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  Must provide OWN vehicle and equipment service and maintenance hand tools (wrenches, sockets, ratchets, toolbox, etc.) as a condition of employment.
Required to meet fleet's minimum hand tool requirements within six (6) months of employment.
Physical Requirements:
  Heavy; tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, reaching, carrying or using a force equal to lifting fifty (50) pounds or greater
