Equipment Mechanic I

Purpose:
  Under close supervision, perform service, maintenance and repairs on vehicles, motorized equipment and trailers used in city operations.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Checks and services vehicles.
2. Changes and repair tires.
3. Lubricates and service vehicles and equipment.
4. Performs tune-ups on gasoline and diesel engines.
5. Overhauls and/or replaces carburetors, distributors, starters, alternators, water pumps, etc.
6. Disassembles repair and service and reinstall vehicle and equipment assemblies such as brake systems, transmissions, radiator/cooling systems, basic hydraulic systems etc.
7. Records properly repairs and service data on appropriate forms and through use of computer equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair.
Knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws.
Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
Knowledge of the methods, equipment and materials used in repair and servicing of automobiles, motorized equipment and trailers.
Skill in oral and written communications.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in planning and organizing.
Ability to perform mechanical and manual dexterity.
Ability to use basic mechanical hand tools, automotive repair and servicing equipment such as vehicle lubrication equipment and tire changing equipment.
Ability to bench test and field test various types of vehicles controls and equipment.
Ability to read and comprehend vehicle services and parts manuals.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
  Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent. Two (2) years experience in general mechanical automotive repairs in major repair facility.

Any combination of related education and/or work experience may substitute for one year of required experience with a maximum substitution of two (2) years.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  Appropriate Texas Driver's license. If required must obtain an appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL) within ninety (90) days of employment with the City.
