Purpose:
 

Under general supervision, provide leadership for personnel engaged in horticultural practices, landscape construction, specialized landscape maintenance, and the application of pesticides

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

1. Oversees the maintenance of programs for propagating plants, cultivating and maintaining flowerbeds, irrigating grounds and landscape, and conserving natural areas.
2. Assists in developing, recommend, implement and monitor programs and projects at garden facilities and plan and develop facility improvements.
3. Supervises and coordinates landscape projects, including walks, retaining walls, irrigation systems, fountains, and other landscape features.
4. Provides advice to other organizations within the City on horticultural practices and procedures.
5. Assists in developing, approve and implement program service guidelines.
6. Provides support to shows, exhibits, workshops and other education programs.
7. Works with various groups and organizations to help inform and help resolve issues on horticultural practices, including organizing volunteer and member participation.
8. Administers contracts to ensure adherence to performance specifications.
9. Assists in developing and implement long and short range goals

Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
 

Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation and recommendation for dismissal.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

Knowledge of horticulture practices.
Knowledge of education programs.
Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in planning and organizing.
Ability to train others.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.

Minimum Qualifications:
 

Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Horticulture or other related field, plus three (3) years of experience managing horticultural programs in the field and programs for the public.

Experience may substitute for education up to four (4) years.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
 

Valid Texas Class "C" Driver License.
Ability to obtain Non-Commercial, Political Applicator License within six (6) months of hire.
