Mail Services Clerk

Purpose:
 

Under general supervision, performs a variety of special and routine mail delivery services.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

1. Sorts, picks up, and distributes inter-office and U.S. mail to City of Austin departments and U.S. post office.
2. Processes outgoing U.S. mail including registered, insured, express, and international mail with proper postage.
3. Verifies that items are addressed correctly and are in suitable condition for processing.  Uses locator services for unidentifiable mail.
4. Lifts and unloads containers of mail or parcels.
5. Initiates and finalizes postage meter processes, weighs packages or letters to determine postage needed.
6. Operates and maintains postage equipment.
7. Completes and submits journal vouchers for allocating charges.
8. Maintains files and records; data/information for reports, and cost estimates on appropriate forms/logs, etc.
9. Audits accounting data and postage charge reporting.  Records data on appropriate logs or forms.

10. Compiles and records data/information for reports and cost estimates.

Knowledge of general mail practices.
Knowledge of federal, state and local laws.
Knowledge of city practices, policies, procedures, statutes and ordinances.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in using computers and related software applications.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in planning and organizing.
Ability to use weighting scales and rate charts.
Ability to lead and train others.
Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.

Ability to quickly recognize and analyze irregular events.

Minimum Qualifications:
 

Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year of experience in mail services or messenger delivery.

Licenses and Certifications Required:
 

Texas Class C Drivers License.
