Park Construction Worker

Purpose:
  Under close supervision, perform skilled construction and renovation tasks in and around City parks grounds, both developed and undeveloped, and parks facilities.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Performs construction-related tasks in and around rough or dangerous terrain, undeveloped and remote areas and in adverse conditions.
  2. Performs construction-related tasks such as form setting, cement finishing, rock and brick masonry, carpentry, plumbing, earth shaping, irrigation and horticulture.
  3. Operates various light motorized construction equipment such as toweling machine, air hammer, chainsaw, tamper, bobcat, generator, sludge pump, trencher and drills.
  4. Operates light truck for the purpose of transporting workers, construction materials and light equipment.
  5. Operates hand tools such as trowel, saw, drill, level, framing square, concrete vibrator, hammer, pipe cutter, winch and tape measure.
  6. Performs tasks requiring repeated heavy lifting, pushing, pulling, digging, hauling, standing, walking, kneeling, stooping, and squatting.
  7. Responds to weather emergencies and provide general labor skills in responding to public needs and restoring public facilities to safe and proper order.
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of equipment used in construction or other related work.
  • Knowledge of park facilities.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships other city employees and the public.
  • Ability to learn simple tasks.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment or materials applicable to the assigned work.
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to train others.
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints and diagrams.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • One (1) year experience related to construction or general labor services.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
 
  • Licensed for the operation of commercial vehicles in the state of Texas within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • To be considered for employment in this position applicants must comply with Department of Transportation Federal Regulations and the City of Austin Drug Policy.
