Radio Technician III

Purpose:
  Under general supervision, perform tasks related to the installation, maintenance and repair of radio communication systems and equipment.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Installs, maintains and repairs mobile and fixed wireless communication systems including but not limited to two-way radios, (mobiles and portables dispatch consoles, base stations, repeaters, antenna systems, etc.), video, mobile data, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, including tuning, programming testing, and troubleshooting, replacing defective parts, and rewiring.
2. Operates and calibrates electronic test equipment.
3. Troubleshoots component boards to determine source of failure or malfunction.
4. Records data on appropriate work orders, forms and logs.
5. Operates soldering tools, drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, and various hand tools such as snips, screwdrivers, pliers, and wire cutters.
6. Drives vehicles as needed.
7. Works on-call status when necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of proper safety practices, procedures and regulations applicable to the work being performed.
Knowledge of tools and equipment used to test and calibrate electronic equipment.
Knowledge of public safety wireless communication systems and equipment including two-way voice radios, base stations, repeaters, combiners, antenna systems, and microwave.
Knowledge of electrical and electronic public safety vehicular equipment.
Knowledge of current and applicable FCC regulations.
Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in using computers and related software applications.
Skill in planning and organizing.
Ability to understand and work from electrical schematics, drawings, blueprints, plans, and specifications.
Ability to trace malfunction in electrical or electronic equipment.
Ability to operate radio communications equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
  Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus four (4) years of experience installing, maintaining and/or repairing radio communications systems and equipment.

Successful completion of technical school program in electronics may substitute for one (1) year of required experience up to the maximum of one (1) year.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  Valid class "C" driver's license, however class "B" license preferred.
Physical Requirements:
  Moderate. Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to fifty (50) pounds
