Radio Technician V

Purpose:
  Under minimal supervision, perform tasks regarding radio communication systems installation, maintenance, and repair for City departments and Interlocal Agreement agencies.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
  Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
1. Troubleshoots, Installs, maintains, and repairs VHF, UHF, 800 MHz Conventional, and 800 MHz analog and digital trunked voice radio communication systems.
2. Installs, maintains, and repairs mobile electronic systems of various types, electronic radio ID systems, microwave systems, mobile data systems, 9-1-1 telephone and radio recording systems, radio alerting systems, emergency lighting and siren systems, telephone interfaces, public address systems, and various other systems.
3. Develops preventative maintenance schedules.
4. Quality checks installations of communication systems and system components, uses appropriately installed software programs to research maintenance histories and opens and closes work orders as required.
5. Checks on the adequacy and quality of repairs made by other technicians, installers, and outside vendors.
6. Updates electronic databases, writes reports, creates spreadsheets and uses various other software for radio equipment programming and maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
Knowledge of electronics, radio communication systems, and RF theory.
Knowledge of how to install, maintain, and repair radio communications systems, equipment, and components.
Knowledge of computer and software systems to support maintenance and repair operations and can instruct others to do so.
Knowledge of applicable Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Rules.
Knowledge of proper safety practices and procedures applicable to the work being performed.
Knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws.
Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
Skill in using computers and related software.
Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
Skill in planning and organizing.
Ability to train others to repair, maintain, and install radio communications systems, equipment, and components.
Ability to judge the quality and adequacy of repairs done by others.
Ability to work from drawings, plans, and specifications.
Ability to work from drawings, plans, and specifications.
Ability to trace malfunctions in electrical or electronic equipment.
Ability to understand and use new maintenance and repair techniques and technology.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees and the public
Minimum Qualifications:
  Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent plus six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience installing, maintaining and/or repairing radio communication systems/equipment, with an emphasis on Motorola Smart Zone 800 MHz digital trunked radio systems preferred.
Equivalent combination of related Education and experience may substitute.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  Valid Class C Texas driver's license; however, Class B is preferred
